Beyond the Sidelines: Football as a Catalyst for Change in Jinja.
JINJA, UGANDA – In Uganda, football is more than just a national pastime; it’s often a desperate avenue for upward mobility. For the myriad of youth in Jinja’s sub-urban and slum areas, educational opportunities are frequently cut short by the economic demands of their households. With limited prospects, many are forced into informal, unstable jobs. This grim reality underscores the urgency of initiatives like the Kaliba Soccer Club.
The Kaliba Foundation’s soccer club, actively participating in the national league, offers a structured environment for vulnerable youth. It’s a strategic investment in holistic development, instilling discipline, teamwork, and leadership—qualities indispensable for navigating life beyond the pitch. This initiative not only creates potential career paths in sports but also generates local employment and stimulates community engagement. As Jinja struggles with youth unemployment and inadequate vocational training, the Kaliba Foundation is demonstrating that a well-placed pass on the field can lead to a powerful future off it.
“I joined the Kaliba Soccer Club because I love football, but I’ve gained so much more. I’ve learned how to be a leader, how to work with my team, and how to be disciplined. This club has given me a purpose and a positive way to spend my time.”
